In Greek mythology, Persephone, daughter of Demeter, goddess of the harvest, was a young woman who one day disappeared among the flowers and descended into the Underworld. Hades, lord of the dead, had taken her away, and in her grief, Demeter allowed the earth to wither. Before her return, Persephone ate several seeds of a pomegranate—the fruit that bound her forever to both worlds.
