Surf Noir Dev Log 2: How to Build Around Your Art Instead of Platforms

Streaming sucks for creators because even “going independent” still means paying endless middlemen for basic infrastructure. So instead of sending fans to Spotify, I built a bespoke direct-to-fan experience that actually enhances my world building around my next album. For my upcoming album You Had to Be There—about life as a Black expat—I created a Japanese payphone–inspired website where fans dial numbers to hear exclusive songs and leave voicemails. The music exists only there, deepening the artist–listener connection. I built the whole thing using Base44, an AI-driven dev tool that bundles frontend, backend, and file uploads into a single workflow, letting them ship fast without getting lost in infrastructure hell. The project shows how custom online activations can function like a modern merch table: not just distributing music, but translating mood, narrative, and world-building into something fans can step inside. The takeaway is simple — streaming distributes, bespoke activations connect, and connection is what artists, fans, and the industry are actually hungry for.
