Somefaces seem to have existed before we ever saw them. They are part of acollective memory shaped by myths, legends, stories, and images passed downfrom one generation to another. Heroes, villains, mythical creatures, and otherancient figures may have no single, definite face, yet we seem instinctivelyready to recognize them—as if something within us already knows how to receivethem. Perhaps this is why these figures continue to return in new forms; fromancient myths and legends to the characters of cinema, animation, and popularculture that become familiar and lasting parts of our minds. In MYTHOSVERS,I draw these mysterious and imagined faces from the layers of my subconscious,through a combination of color, form, and a touch of ambiguity. Ambiguity isnot necessarily an absence of information; sometimes, it is a space where theviewer’s memory and imagination become active. These are not portraits ofspecific characters, but figures that emerge from the mind—somewhere betweenmemory and imagination, familiarity and unfamiliarity. Perhaps what werecognize in them is not a face we have seen before, but something we havealways been prepared to see.
