A Deer of Nine Colors - Patron

This edition provides support for the upcoming film "A Deer of Nine Colors" premiering November 2025 at the Thailand Biennial. “A Deer of Nine Colors” is a modern folktale short film written and directed by Andrew Thomas Huang. The film follows a young Thai trans cabaret performer who learns from a vision that she is a reincarnation of an extinct deer. Embarking on a mystic quest to unearth her past life, she enlists the help of a wildlife biologist to find her true name. When the biologist subjects her to lab experiments to retrace her memories, she relives her past as the last deer of her kind, roaming the forest on all fours lonely and hunted. As the biologist falls in love with the young woman and tries to control her, the young woman dreams of escape and fantasizes about blissfully reincarnating into the enlightened Nine Colored Deer who roamed the mythical Buddhist paradise of Himavanta. When the biologist tries to entrap her for good, the young Woman fights back, escapes and musters the courage to name herself. In doing so, she achieves true bliss and transforms into the Nine Colored Deer and ascends to the mythical forest of Himavanta where she roams wild and free for eternity.
