Tomatoes and Turmeric Bread
In summer, in the south, when it is too hot to light the fire, people eat bread and tomato. Nothing else. A bit of salt, a little oil if there is, and that's it, because with forty degrees nobody wants to make life complicated. It is a food of the heat, thought for the heat. Turmeric is a spice of India, which is another heat, more humid, more far away, but which has something in common with the Mediterranean one, a kind of relation that I cannot explain well. Turmeric bread and tomato have the taste of two different summers in the same bite, one sour and one bitter, and I like this thing very much. I don't know if it is still tradition. Probably not. But the taste, you understand immediately that it is from the south, from any south, it is enough that there is strong sun and no wish to cook. Maybe it is only summer.
