Children of the Sun

Anthony Azekwoh

In 2022, Anthony Azekwoh, artist and author, had an idea for a story—of the Sun, and the day he grew tired of just burning and he descended to Earth to walk among us and have a life, have children. The idea sparked and flickered, first imagined as a short story collection (it wasn't that). Then, it took the shape of a culinary experience, fusing African food with its diaspora (it also wasn't that). Time passed and the idea lingered in the shadows of other projects, exhibitions, and shows. But ideas, like seeds, have their own seasons. They wait, they grow roots, they bide their time. The years flowed on, and Anthony grew older through that journey. He met new faces, loved deeply, lost painfully, and lived fully. Through those experiences, the idea grew—not in the foreground, but somewhere deep within, gaining weight and purpose. In April 2025, that flicker from three years ago coalesced into what we now see: A living, breathing tapestry of memory and myth. 25 new paintings, hand-painted digitally by Anthony, each one crafted with the mastery he’s honed over nearly a decade. These aren’t just paintings—they are stories. They are life, captured in strokes and color. They are the Black experience, rendered human, vibrant, diverse, strong, and unyielding. This collection is Anthony Azekwoh at his most powerful: weaving stories, culture, and mythology into a seamless body of work. Each painting represents a star in proximity to the Sun. Some stars dance, radiant and unrestrained; others are quiet, soft, and at rest. While we may see the cosmos, Anthony invites us to feel them. Ideas take time to become what they are meant to be, and that's good—that's their magic. It's how worlds are made. This is the Children of the Sun: a constellation of stories, dreams, and lived experience, finally come to life.
