Snow falls from a sky that remembers. It drifts across the river, across two bison standing in quiet symmetry, their backs turned to one another, their forms dark against the white world. The storm softens everything. And, for a moment, time loosens its grip. The scene becomes untethered from the modern world, and it is easy to imagine another winter morning, centuries ago. When the river followed the same course, when snow gathered in the same folds of grass, when countless bison moved across these valleys like shadows upon the land. Before the roads. Before the towns. Before the fences. Much has changed beyond the frame. Yet here, in this fleeting moment, something remains. The ancient rhythm of a wild country. The enduring presence of these ancient beasts, The quiet persistence of a landscape that still remembers what it once was. What remains grows increasingly fragile. The open spaces fewer. The land they roam overwhelmed. Yet the river still flows, the snow still falls, and these two bison stand as they always might have, a living echo of a world before the fences. Timeless Series

This edition, "Before the Fences," celebrates the end of a two-year series on SuperRare. Timeless is a series of black-and-white wildlife and landscape photographs that explore the boundary between reality and our dreams of the American West. Images that pull you into the scene's history, evoking a sense of timelessness and solitude. Each piece reflects the quiet wonder of encountering wildlife, a scenic view, or the remains of a human presence as it has existed for hundreds of years, unaltered. In an era when our public lands grow increasingly crowded, I am drawn instead to moments of stillness; moments where I lose myself in nature. This series draws inspiration from Frosted, my image of bison braving a blizzard at 30 below zero in Yellowstone, in the BatSoupYum collection. For more than an hour, I stood alone in that frozen silence, watching as the snow blurred form and texture until the scene resembled a painting. That experience, raw, elemental, and profoundly quiet, became the essence of Timeless. As I continued to look back on this image and the story it told, I knew I wanted to follow it with a black-and-white series. 26 pieces have been collected, and the last four pieces are now listed.
