33 3ANGLEs
33 3ANGLEs
In the Persian alphabet, there are two letters that represent sounds similar to the English H. One of them is called He Do Cheshm (هـ), which literally means “the H with two eyes.” Its shape looks like a triangle resting on its base, with two eye-like openings inside. To me, it has always resembled a human head.
One day, I was freely sketching an abstract form when I noticed that it was starting to look like He Do Cheshm. I decided to keep that shape and add the sarkesh of the letter Alef (آ), the distinctive curved stroke at the top of the letter. Somehow, the combination of these shapes and abstract twists felt right. By playing with light and shadow, I gave the drawing a sense of volume, making it look almost like a sculpture. That was how the first work came to life.
I kept sketching, exploring different ways to work with these two letters. Over time, other elements of Persian script, such as dots, connections, and negative spaces, began to appear in my drawings. What started as a series of spontaneous sketches slowly turned into a more focused study. Eventually, I decided to bring these works together as a collection.
The triangular shape of He Do Cheshm made the number three an important part of the project. I created 33 works and called the collection 33 Triangles, playing with the word triangle to create the name 33 3ANGLEs.
When it came to presenting the works, I had to decide whether to show the original drawings or take them in a different direction. I became interested in how different materials could change the way we see a form and perceive its volume. I used AI to explore each drawing in different materials and selected one version of each design for the final collection.
33 3ANGLEs is a collection of 33 digital images of sculptural forms inspired by Persian letters and script. It looks at these letters beyond their everyday use in writing and explores how their shapes can become a starting point for artistic creation.
Titles
The Persian alphabet consists of 32 letters, with the dot also serving as an important visual element in Persian script. Since the works in this collection are inspired by Persian letters, each piece is named after a letter of the alphabet. The final work in the collection is titled Noghte, meaning “Dot.”
